    Altec Lansing 301 loud speakers

I have a pair of 301 speakers which I love and have owned since the early 1990's.I purchased them brand new from a Hi-Fi store by the name of Bywn Mawr Stereo.I have replaced both woofers once.I recently noticed that I have a dead midrange. Can this part (midrange) be repaired or can a direct O.E.M be found for this model.I really hate to have to modify the original foot print.I play music and listen to video thru these great speakers.I do not want to part with them.Specs: Altec Lansing 301 200w max. 8 ohm nom.10inch sub. The numbers on the back of the mid are A0038 09A86 AL NO. M11650 6640 Can anyone point me in the right direction or contact please.Thank you for taking the time.Happy Holidays.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but they aren't real Altecs.

Anything with Milford Pennsylvania on the back was made by Sparkomatic who licensed the Altec name for home stereo stuff after Altec went bankrupt.

Best bet is check at Parts express, you can get someone in an online conversation. They probably have something. Sparkomatic is horrible on parts and support.
Your neighbors called. They like your music.

As a last resort keep an eye out on ebay, 301's and 501's end up being parted out there fairly often.

I seem them pop up time to time on Craig's, also passed on a few pairs of those at the local thrifts time to time.

The REAL Altec sold it's name BEFORE they went bankrupt. So there were a couple of years where there were TWO companies making Altec speakers...One professional..and one Home/Car. Not that it really matters since the REAL Altec went bankrupt shortly after.

As for replacement mid...GOOD LUCK. Sparkomatic is notorious for extremely poor service. I doubt you can find a replacement part.

If you want a much better sounding speaker at about the same size...Look on E-Bay for a used pair of Altec Model-6 or Model-8. And even though the REAL Altec is out of business you can still get replacement parts through Great Plains.

My timing might be slightly off but it was so close to the bankruptcy that I won't quibble semantics. They were broke.

A couple of points...it wasn't SOLD. Sparkomatic only leased the name for home and auto applications.. They didn't BUY it until after Telex shut Altec down.

There were two companies making speakers with Altec on them from the 80's to late 90's. Not just a couple years.

I am curious though if your info is correct why does Altec Consumer Products claim it was established in 1986 well after the bankruptcy?

    http://www.alteclansing.com/index.ph...ect=milestones

1982 - Altec Lansing builds almost 4,000 channels of power amplification for Disney's Epcot Center.

1986 - Altec Lansing Consumer Products is established in Milford, Pennsylvania to design, engineer and introduce a line of high fidelity loudspeakers for the home and car.

1990 - Altec Lansing introduces the first PC audio speaker system, the ACS200/300.

Re: Altec Lansing 301 loud speakers

........In any case, it's a shame.....a damn dirty shame that the once mighty Altec name no longer exist and is a major player (if not LEADER) in the world of home & pro-audio although while names like Bose & Klipsch have remained in the field.

....All appologies to toddreka for side-tracking the thread......but I just HAD to say it!

....Also....no offense intended to Bose & Klipsch users either but this IS an ALTEC fan site after all.....just sayin'!

    Russ,
You da man for telling it like it is.
I miss the old Altec. I miss my dad too.
But, in these times it is guys like us that keep these things alive.
God bless us and the good things we keep alive...

"Established" could mean a name change, or a new facility, a new Sparky Altec product, etc...... some point ALT wants to point to, rather than a lease agreement date.
